Red Jacket Readers book club discussion of Educated: A Memoir, by Tara Westover
6:30 – 8:00 pm
Calumet Public Library
Open to the Public

Educated: A Memoir, by Tara Westover: “An unforgettable memoir about a young girl who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University.  Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.” (Penguin/Random House review)

On June 19th at the Calumet Public Library, Master Gardener Volunteer Trainee Amalia Anderson will talk about the challenges and joys of gardening in Calumet.  In her words, “I’ve been gardening in the Calumet area for four years.  During this time, I’ve made lots of mistakes and have learned a lot.  The challenges have run the gamut, from old plants to new pests.  In this lecture I’ll share what I’ve learned and where I go to find scientifically based answers when I run into a new problem that needs solving.”

Join other gardeners, new and experienced, to discuss the challenges and lessons learned in gardening locally; find solutions to nagging problems and pose questions stemming from your own experiences.  This is the first in a three-part Horticulture Series to be held on the third Wednesday of June, July, and August at the Calumet Public Library.
