Calumet High School Welding Student Excels at Skills USA Competition

From the CLK School Board:

The best career and technical students from across the Upper Peninsula competed at the regional
Skills USA competition at Bay College in Escanaba on February 9, 2018. A Calumet High
School welding student excelled in the Welding Division. Warren Torola placed 2nd in the
Overall Division and now qualifies to compete in the State Finals in Grand Rapids.

Board Vice President Dr. Michael Luoma said, “With a growing need nationwide for a skilled
workforce in the industrial arts, Skills USA reinforces that partnership of students, teachers, and
industry to meet that need. Our school and students’ success is a testament to this partnership.”

The Board recognized the following Calumet High School students who were inducted into the
National Honor Society on January 17th, along with their Advisor Joe Heflin:

In other action the Board:

-declared the week of March 5-9, 2018, as National School Breakfast Week and commended our
food service staff for their dedicated and loyal service to our district.

-commended Mike Roland and Holly Rivest on their successful applications to become pilot
districts for the Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE), Minecraft: Education Edition
(M:EE) licensing program.

-congratulated those students that participated in the MSBOA District Solo and Ensemble
Festival held at Lake Linden-Hubbell High School on February 3rd.

-congratulated the JROTC Battalion on winning the Spirit Award for best sportsmanship, the
team of Skye Bragagnini, Jenna Kivela-Heinz, Gabriella Sullivan and Zachary Vaitkevicius on
placing 4th in Knowledge Bowl and to Eric Martin on placing 9th in Individual Drill at the Upper
Midwest JROTC Challenge held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on February 9th & 10th.
Congratulations are also extended to Instructors Major Michael Farley and 1SG Mark Powell.

-congratulated those students who took part in the Poetry Out Loud Competition held on
January 8th.

-commended those who took part in the Washington Middle School winter program and their
Directors Ryan Watt.

-commended Mike Ojala along with the many volunteers who participated in the elementary
basketball tournament held on Saturday, January 20th.

-expressed appreciation to Mary and Rodger Kershner for their generous donation of $5000 to
the CLK Schools to be used to offset the costs of breakfast and lunches for students in the lunch
program.

-expressed appreciation to Sherwin Williams and manager Alan Sunn for their donation of 10
gallons of primers and paints, paintbrushes, hats, can keys and stir sticks to the Horizons
Alternative High School to be used to cover and replace existing murals at the school.

-expressed appreciation to Doug Jurmu from Royale, Inc., for his generous donation of a dual
process CNC Lathe to Calumet High School. Appreciation should also be extended to Ron
Hyrkas and Jeff Kalcich and the Village of Laurium for assisting with transporting and unloading
the machine.

-extended their appreciation to Ryan Watt for his successful grant totaling over $1300.00 from
DonorsChoose.org to provide the band with two snare drums.

-expressed appreciation to the American Legion Post 61 for their donation of $600 to Calumet
High School to be shared between the JROTC Battalion, and the varsity football and varsity
volleyball teams.

-adopted NEOLA Policy revisions.

-appointed Nora Laho to the Instructional Technology Coach/District Technology Coordinator
position effective February 9, 2018.

-approved signature authority to Christopher Davidson and Thomas Sturos for the Certificate of
Deposit at Superior National Bank.

-accepted the Letter of Understanding between the Board of Education and the Calumet
Education Association.

The Board will reconvene on Tuesday, March 13th, at 5:30 p.m., in the Board of Education
Room.
