Calumet Suspends Police Officer Search

The Village of Calumet is giving up its effort to hire a police officer.

At last night’s village council meeting, council member Doug Harrer said the current posting has produced no qualified applicants. The public safety committee suggested abandoning the effort – for now – and considering using the money for other purposes…

“For instance, like, community watch, getting with Laurium to see about having a patrol kind of similar to what the the township did with us when we had a police department, taking some money and investing it into some cameras, taking some money and putting it toward UPSET.”

The council turned down a recommendation from the street committee to raise sidewalk plowing assessments from $5.00 to $6.00 per linear foot. Councilor Roxanne King conceded the need for more revenue, but didn’t think that was the way to get it…

“Our shopkeepers are our lifeblood of our community, and they are in a bind, just trying to survive. I don’t think that this is the appropriate time to raise the plowing cost.”

The proposal failed on a 5-1 vote.

Virginia Dwyer was appointed to the village planning commission with a 4-2 vote.

The council is concerned about the health of four heritage maple trees in the lot next to the Calumet Theatre. An arborist from Lake Superior Tree Service shared a preliminary assessment…

“The crotches are getting a lot of rot into them, they won’t dry out, and it’s causing a lot of branches to die off in there. I looked at a couple of them that looked like they might be saved, but in my opinion, this is just going to keep getting worse and worse on those trees in there.”

One tree is probably beyond saving, and will likely need to be removed for safety reasons. The others may be able to be pruned. The council asked the arborist to develop a complete proposal.
