Campaign Encourages Visits To The Porcupine Mountains

ONTONAGON, Mich. (July 2, 2018)—There’s a lot to explore in the scenic western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, from the massive old-growth forests of the Porcupine Mountains to the famed Copper Country of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Now, the Porcupine Mountains Convention & Visitors Bureau (PMCVB) and the Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau have launched a new promotion to make sure visitors to the western U.P. take in everything the area has to offer this summer.

The Summer in the U.P. Sweepstakes, which runs through Aug. 24, will award one grand-prize winner with a western U.P. prize package that includes lodging in Ontonagon County and at the Country Inn & Suites in Houghton, $75 to spend at Fitzgerald’s in Eagle River and a state of Michigan recreation passport.

To enter, fans can visit the PMCVB website, www.porcupinemountains.com, or the Keweenaw CVB website, www.keweenaw.info.

In conjunction with the promotion, the PMCVB and the Keweenaw CVB have created several day trip itineraries catering to visitors who wish to explore the region this summer. The itineraries are based on four major themes:

Lake Superior. The greatest of the Great Lakes has a lot to offer visitors, from sandy beaches to opportunities for boating and fishing.

Outdoors. Recreational options abound the western U.P., from the massive Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in Ontonagon County to sea kayaking in the Keweenaw.

Mining adventures. Visitors can discover the rich mining history of the U.P.’s Copper Country at educational sites like the Quincy Mine in Hancock or Adventure Mine in Greenland.

History. Learn what life was like for early U.P. settlers at one of nearly two dozen Keweenaw Heritage sites, from museums and historical sites to theaters and parks.
