Can The U.P. Still Get Propane Without Line 5?

Is there an alternative way to deliver propane to the U.P. without Line 5?

Silver Wolf Midstream CEO Neil Rootare seems to think so.

He recently told NPR his new company plans to use an idle pipeline from Sarnia, Ontario to Michigan’s Gaylord/Kalkaska area, then transport propane up I 75 and over the Mackinac Bridge, to the U.P. Market.

Rootare expects to close the deal before years end, and hopes to be sending propane to the U.P. By the Fall of 2021.

Enbridge Spokesman Ryan Duffy said the propane pipeline would not replace or lessen the need for Line 5.

The current Line 5 set up is 67 years old, and was shut down earlier this Summer after a structure that holds the pipeline in place was damaged.

The pipeline has since resumed operations.

The new Line 5 is currently in the permitting stage.
