CCISD Board Hears Good State Budget News

The Copper Country Intermediate School District Board of Education heard some good financial news this week.

At its meeting on Tuesday, Superintendent George Stockero reported that the recent state budget supplemental agreements reinstated funding for rural and isolated school districts. Many districts in our region receive that money to help with busing costs.

The state also restored funding for literacy coaches. The CCISD currently has one literacy coach, whose position will now be totally paid for by the state. In addition, a second literacy coach position has been granted to the CCISD. Stockero told the board he hopes to have that position filled by summer.

Stockero also noted that the agreement requires the state budget for the next fiscal year to be passed by the legislature and presented to the governor by July 1st, instead of September 31st. That will help local school boards set their budgets.

The CCISD board also accepted the resignation of secretary Mary Kaipio, and hired Mariah Powell to replace her. David Waye was hired as a systems engineer, and Dale Verran and Heather L’Esperance were approved as permanent instructional aides.
