CCISD Students Teach Handwashing To Chassell Second Graders

Health Careers students from the Copper Country ISD visited Chassell’s second grade class to teach the importance of proper hand washing.

The second graders learned how and when to properly wash their hands. Health Careers students used “glogerm” to demonstrate the importance of proper hand washing along with activities showing how quickly germs spread.

The Health Careers students planned and prepared for the day ahead of time determining developmentally appropriate and interesting activities for the second graders.

The Health Careers students knew the importance of good hand washing because they learned and use it throughout the year. Teaching what they knew was a great experience for all involved.

The Health Careers students are also part of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA). As members of HOSA, part of the students’ mission is to give back to their community.

The Health Careers students enjoyed their day with the second graders and felt that they were definitely helping give back.

Chassell second grade teacher, Sue Hietala was very impressed with the Health Career students. Mrs. Heitala stated that, “The Health Careers students did a wonderful job working with my second grade students and explaining their lesson on hand washing. They had a well thought out lesson divided up into different centers for my students to go through. The Health Careers students were very prepared to work with the younger students, and looked very comfortable while doing it.”

Mrs. Heitala added, “My students were engaged in all the activities and enjoyed having the girls come in and teach them about hand washing. I heard some of my students reviewing what they learned while they were washing their hands for lunch. YEAH! :)”

It was a great experience for everyone. Well done!

At the end of the lessons every second grader who learned hand washing received a HOSA t-shirt.
