City Of Houghton Passes Budget, Capital Improvement Plan

The City of Houghton has their 2019-2020 fiscal year budget in place.

The City Council voted to approve the proposed budget along with the Capital Improvement Plan at their regular meeting Wednesday.

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara called it a balanced budget for all funds except for the employee benefit fund which includes a budget deficit of $86,750 in order to continue to draw down the fund balance within that fund.

An average 3 percent wage increase for city employees is included in the budget, the employee benefit rate for full-time employees is budgeted at 77 percent, and the budget includes funds to add another full-time officer to the Houghton Police Department.

Waara said there will be slight rate increases for water and sewer customers as part of improvement projects through USDA Rural Development.

The 2019-2025 Capital Improvement Plan was adapted to fit the requirements of the MEDC’s Redevelopment Ready Program.
