Commissioner Ala’s Resignation Requested By County Board

Houghton County Commissioner Scott Ala is being asked to resign from the county board.

A resolution to send a letter requesting his resignation was approved by the Board of Commissioners at a special meeting Thursday.

The meeting was called to determine the residency of Ala after it was established that he was in Florida.

Ala appeared by speaker phone and said he currently has a Florida driver’s license but still keeps an apartment in Houghton.

He said his plans were to live full time in Florida after his term expires at the end of the year.

But because his license was issued by the state of Florida, that is where his voting district is also.

A county commissioner must live and be registered to vote in the district they represent.

A response from Ala to the board’s request for his resignation is expected soon.
