Competency Examination Ordered For Suspect In Sister’s Murder

Kitti PrelimA Houghton County man charged with the murder of his sister appeared in 97th District Court Monday morning.

32-year-old Christian Paul Kitti is charged with Homicide—Open Murder in the shooting death of 44-year-old Kimberly Renee Bess of Calumet.

Police say Bess was found dead outside of a residence in Laurium in July.

Kitti’s attorney asked the court to adjourn today’s preliminary examination, saying they intend to file a notice of insanity defense.

The defense also requested that the court order a forensic examination to determine competency and criminal responsibility.

His attorney indicated that the defendant was already under a court order of mental incompetency out of the Probate Court of Kent County at the time of the alleged incident.

The judge signed the orders and adjourned the case until the results of the forensic examinations are received.

In the meantime, Kitti remains lodged in the Houghton County Jail.
