Conceptual Design Proposals Sought For Jail Addition

Houghton County needs a new jail, but it is still unclear what the final project will look like.

The board of commissioners voted Tuesday to put out a request for proposals for the conceptual design of a jail addition, but many of the details are being left to the contractor to propose.

The board is requesting that an option be included for a new District Court as part of the project.

Commissioners Scott Ala and Anton Pintar both argued that the board should formalize more of the details before putting the project out for bid, but only the minimum requirements will be included in the request.

Further details of the conceptual design will be addressed later on.

The State of Michigan would still have to approve any design and voters would have to approve a millage to pay for the project.
