Construction Projects Highlight Look Back On 2017

The year 2017 was a busy one in the City of Houghton.

The city council was given a full report in a wrap-up by city manager Eric Waara Wednesday night.

The Lakeshore Drive project was the biggest one in the city and while it was not completely finished, it will add much to the city when it is completed.

In his report, Waara said the project will be completed this spring and said “that section of Lakeshore Drive will look like a downtown street instead of a back alley.”

The Kestner Park Seawall was another project that received many repairs by the Department of Public Works last year.

The council decided to hire Kendricks-Bourdeau of Marquette for the upcoming year as the city’s attorney.

Waara said the use of the law firm will evaluated on a monthly basis.

In other action, the council:
* Voted to accept the audit for 2017.
* Was told that a meeting on the skate park will be held on Feb. 13.
* Was informed by police chief John Donnelly that 3,351 cases were investigated last year, with 16 felony warrants issued.
