Copper Country Strawberry Festival Begins Today

Plump, ripe, juicy and red all the way through–you know when you’re eating a Chassell strawberry.

Pile a bunch of those delicious strawberries onto a fresh baked shortcake, top with a little whipped cream, and you have yourself one of the tastiest treats of the summer.

There will be plenty of strawberry shortcakes served up at the 69th annual Copper Country Strawberry Festival.

The festival opens today and John MacKrain from the Chassell Lions Club says the strawberry crop this year is magnificent.

The festival also features other great food and music, one of the largest outdoor markets in the area, the Strawberry Queen Pageant and the Strawberry Parade.

There’s a fish boil this afternoon and BBQ chicken being served up after the parade tomorrow by the Chassell Fire Department and First Responders.

Michigan Tech will be taking people out on scientific excursions aboard their research vessel Agassiz, and there are many other events taking place in Chassell over the weekend.

Lions Club member Lois Berg says the festival is a big draw.

They start serving up the strawberry shortcake this morning at 9.
