COVID-19 Cases Rise Locally, but Remain Moderate

COVID-19 diagnoses rose in the Copper Country last week, but the numbers remain modest.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 49 new confirmed cases in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties, up from 33 in the previous week.

Statewide numbers edged downward, with an average daily diagnoses rate of 1,849 – 237 lower than the previous week. The average number of people who died each day from COVID-related illness fell from 21 two weeks ago to 17 last week.

Officials note that the actual infection rate could be significantly higher. Positive home tests are frequently not reported. Mild cases may go undiagnosed, although even asymptomatic victims can spread the virus to others.
