COVID Cases Surge Again

The COVID-19 spotlight has shifted back to Houghton County. After a dropoff in diagnoses over the Thanksgiving Weekend, last night’s report from the Upper Peninsula Health Department includes a whopping 139 more confirmed positives across the five-county area, and another 62 probable cases since the last update was released Monday night.

Half of those cases are in Houghton County. Gogebic County has 37 new confirmed positives. Baraga County has 14, Ontonagon County has 11, and Keweenaw County reported three.

Five more deaths were reported – one each in Houghton and Gogebic Counties, and three in Baraga County, where the Bayside Village Nursing Home has been hard hit.

208 recoveries have been confirmed.

Since the pandemic began, 2,686 COVID-19 diagnoses have been confirmed in the five-county region, with an additional 666 probable cases. 76 of our neighbors have died.
