Democratic Candidates Make Pitches in Baraga County

First District Democratic Congressional candidate Dr. Bob Lorinser met with voters in Baraga last evening.

At the gathering, which was hosted by the Baraga County Democratic Party, Lorinser outlined his priorities, including election integrity…

Protection of our elections from interferences, dark money, Gerrymandering and voter supression.

Fresh water…

We have 20 percent of the fresh water. You know, we are the guardians of that fresh water.

Health Care…

Universal health care is not socialistic. It is a right of being an American.

Abortion…

I’m an advocate for life, and a proponent of choice, privacy, and individual liberty.

Lorinser committed to taking steps to help reduce the need for abortion.

He does not support paying off student loans…

It’s not fair, it’s not just, and it doesn’t solve the problem.

He says the high cost of post-secondary education must be addressed.

And, even though the First Congressional District has been in Republican hands for nearly a dozen years, Lorinser thinks it can be taken back…

Our First District is 45 percent Democrat, 35 percent Republican, and 20 percent independent. We outnumber them. We do not outvote them.

The two Democratic primary candidates in the 109th State House race also spoke. Joe Boogren left no question about his feelings for the current Republican leadership…

Donald Trump is a seditious, treasonous bastard. And (Jack) Bergman is a carpetbagging, seditious, treasonous bastard.

Despite that, Boogren touted his ability to work with Republicans as supervisor of predominantly red Forsythe Township. He also talked about his military background, which included combat duty as a fighter pilot.

Marquette City Commissioner Jenn Hill focused on energy costs, including the region’s notoriously high electrical rates…

If you have to measure out how long you have your Christmas lights on because you’re worried about how much that’s going to coat, that’s not right.

Hill served on the recent U.P. Energy Advisory Task Force.

The two candidates differed on one important issue. Boogren supports continued operation of the Enbridge Line Five pipeline, and the construction of the proposed new tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. Hill believes Line Five can be shut down with little significant impact on propane supply or cost to U.P. residents.

Legislative redistricting recently shifted Baraga County into the 109th State House District.
