Dianda, Casperson & Schuette Lead Efforts To Recognize Mroz

State Representative Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) and State Senator Tom Casperson (R-Escanaba) sponsored resolutions in the House and Senate, respectively, in tribute to Michigan Tech University President Glenn Mroz, who will step down at the end of this month. In addition, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette crafted a tribute to Mroz.

The tributes were signed last Thursday, June 7, the same day Michigan Tech hosted a community reception to honor Mroz and his wife Gail.

The Senate tribute, introduced by Casperson, expressed the Senate’s desire to “Join with the State of Michigan, the higher education community, local Upper Peninsula leaders and Michigan Tech administrators, faculty, students and alumni to express our appreciation to Dr. Glenn D. Mroz for his many years of exemplary service as President of Michigan Technological University.”

The document further states that through Mroz’s “leadership, initiative and character, Michigan Tech has further strengthed its renowned international reputation for exceptional academic quality, its incredible value and remarkable quality of life.”

The House of Representatives tribute, introduced by Dianda, highlighted Mroz’s history with the University and listed many of his accomplishments including an increase in faculty, enrollment and freshmen class academic profiles. The tribute states, “Dr. Mroz has proven himself to be a champion of educational excellence, which is something everyone can appreciate.”

Both tributes were signed by Casperson, Dianda, Governor Rick Snyder and Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley. In addition, the Senate tribute was signed by House Speaker Tom Leonard and Senate Majority Leader Arlan B. Meekhof.

State Attorney General Bill Schuette personally presented a tribute to Mroz. Schuette lauded Mroz for his leadership at Michigan Tech and noted Mroz, “served as chair of the Presidents Council State Universities of Michigan and was former Chair of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Council of Presidents and was integral in the success of Michigan Tech as a leading STEM university.”

Mroz’s last day as University president is June 30, at which time he will become president emeritus on leave before returning to the faculty in a year.

In April it was announced that Richard J. Koubek, formerly executive vice president and provost of Louisana State University, will succeed Mroz and begin his duties as the University’s 10th president on July 1.
