DNR to Arrange Plowing for Ice Fishing Access

Ice fishers will have better access to some Copper Country lakes this winter. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has organized a pilot program to keep boating access sites plowed.

In all, 26 access sites across the Upper Peninsula will be kept open this winter.

Local sites include…
• Vermilac Lake and the Silver River in Baraga County,
• Gratiot Lake, Lake Medora and Lake Bailey in Keweenaw County
• Lake Michigamme in western Marquette County.

The actual plowing will be done by local partners, including the Baraga and Keweenaw County Road Commissions. Some sites will be maintained by private businesses or sports organizations.

If your business or organization would like to maintain an access site, contact Stacy Haughey at WellingS1@michigan.gov or 906-226-1331.
