Environmental Group Holding Public Meeting To Oppose Wind Project

A public informational presentation is being held Wednesday to discuss opposition to the proposed Summit Lake Wind Project.

The event will be held at the L’Anse American Legion at 6pm and is being presented by the Friends of the Huron Mountains.

The environmental group says they will provide “unbiased data so that citizens of L’Anse Township and Baraga County can make their own informed opinion about the project”.

The project is proposed by Minnesota-based Renewable Energy Systems and involves developing a wind energy facility on commercial timberland about five miles east of L’Anse.

According to the RES website, the facility would consist of 48 wind turbines, each nearly 500 feet tall and generating a total of 130 megawatts of energy.

The Friends of the Huron Mountains argue that the energy generated would not be accessible to township residents and would not result in lower electric bills.

The Summit Lake Wind Project has a target construction date of 2019.
