Federal Grants Will Boost Local Sewer Projects

Several Copper Country communities will receive federal help to fund sewage system improvements.

The United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development announced the loans and grants yesterday.

The North Houghton County Water and Sewage Authority will receive a $4,620,000 loan to repair and replace lines, and make the existing treatment facility more efficient.

Portage Township will receive a $217,000 loan and $1,481,000 grant to extend sewer lines to 62 homes and businesses that have failing septic systems. 

The Village of L’Anse will receive a $125,000 loan and $375,000 grant to complete improvements to their wastewater collection and treatment system.
