Finlandia Salutes Graduates

Finlandia University handed out diplomas at its commencement ceremony in the Hirvonen Hall Auditorium Sunday.

Student speaker Arty Puntus, a native of Belarus, also noted that the special challenges his class faced will have a silver lining…

It’s really important to look at adversity and obstacles as a positive thing, because that makes us better people, and makes us more confident.

Speaker Vance Blackfox, director of Indigenous Ministries and Tribal Relations for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, explained how his ancestors in the Cherokee nation contributed to his life story, and asked graduates what their stories are based on…

How do your ancestors make their way into that story? How do your faculty and your teachers from back home, how do they make their way into that story? And then, how might Jesus make his way into your story?

Blackfox then challenged them to craft their stories to have positive effects today, and on future generations.

Dr. Richard Gee of the Criminal Justice program was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award.
