Flood Warning Issued For Sturgeon River Area

With the rain and snowmelt recently, flooding is expected to be a concern in the Copper Country.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for the Sturgeon River area near Alston affecting parts of Baraga and Houghton Counties.

The location received around an inch of rain Sunday, and that combined with the continued melt of the snowpack has enabled increased flow out of the Prickett Dam.

Additional light rainfall is expected this afternoon and evening.

At 7:30pm Sunday, the stage was at 6.7 feet and the river is expected to rise above flood stage by this afternoon and continue to rise to near 8.1 feet by this evening.

Homes and structures along the low lying areas and numerous roads could be impacted by flood water.

Areas to watch for flooding over the road in Houghton County include Sturgeon River Road, Aho Road, and Rajala Road.

In Baraga County, watch out for Sturgeon Road, Halonen Road and Usitalo Road, along Froberg Road, Tahtinen Road, Irwin Road, Oliver Road, and Shirley Road.

Cooler temperatures will slow the melt of the snowpack over the next couple of days. The warning is in effect until 8:30pm Wednesday.
