Houghton Fraternity House Damaged by Fire

An early morning fire damaged the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house on College Avenue in Houghton.

The Houghton Fire Department arrived at the scene around 4:30 this morning. Heavy smoke from the blaze was observed for several hours.

Officials say there were people in the home when the fire broke out, but they escaped, and no one was hurt.

Houghton officials say the blaze began on the third floor of the building, which is located between the Michigan Tech campus and downtown Houghton.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. An investigation by the Houghton Police and Fire Departments is underway.

College Avenue/Northbound US-41 was closed as firefighters worked. Motorists were detoured up MacInnes Drive to Sharon Avenue.

This story will be updated as additional information becomes available.
