Free Diabetes-PATH Workshop Helps Adults Manage Symptoms, Improve Health

HOUGHTON, Mich. – A free diabetes self-management workshop is being offered at the Portage Lake District Library in Houghton to help adults with Type 2 diabetes improve their health and better manage their symptoms. The workshop provides the skills and tools needed to face the daily challenges of living with diabetes.

The six-week Diabetes – Personal Action Toward Health (Diabetes – PATH) workshop takes place on Monday afternoons, October 15 through November 19, from 2:30 to 5 in the Community Room at the library. The workshop is for adults with diabetes, their family members, friends and caregivers. Class sizes are limited and pre-registration is required. To register, dial 2-1-1 or (800) 338-7227. Online registration is available at www.upcap.org/events.

Diabetes – PATH is conducted by two trained leaders using workshop curriculum that was developed by Stanford University. Subjects covered include: symptoms of diabetes, stress, managing fatigue and emotional problems, exercise, healthy eating, medications, and working with health care providers.

Catherine Isaacson, one of the Diabetes – PATH facilitators, said the workshop covers many things about diabetes, and participants will learn ways to help take care of their health.

“Diabetes – PATH doesn’t change your treatment, but you can learn new ways to talk to your health care team and help manage your diabetes,” she said.

The Diabetes – PATH workshop is administered by Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress (UPCAP) with support from Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics and the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network.
