Get Involved At The Calumet Public Library

The Friends of the Calumet Public Library is offering numerous ways for people to get involved in the community.  There are many ways to lend a hand at the library, including programming ideas, volunteer opportunities, and the Red Jacket Readers book club.

Meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 in the library’s community room.  This is an open meeting, and new members and fresh ideas are welcome.

An easy way to get involved is to suggest a book to be read by the Red Jacket Readers in the coming year.  Four titles will be chosen, dates selected, and the Friends will purchase up to four copies of each to place in circulation at the library.

The next presentation at the Library will be “Hospice Matters” presented by Aspirus At Home-Hospice team members on January 9th.

Staff members will explain what hospice is and all about the Aspirus team approach.

Other topics will include managing symptoms, insurance coverage, and where hospice can take place.

This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Calumet Public Library.

Red Jacket Readers book club discussion of Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate                                                                                                                         6:30 – 8:00 pm

Open to the Public

“It is almost a cliché to say a book is “lovingly written” but that phrase applies clearly to Lisa Wingate’s novel Before We Were Yours. This story about children taken from their parents through kidnapping or subterfuge and then placed for adoption, for a price, clearly pours out of Wingate’s heart. The plot is based on actual incidents and is a shameful indictment of a set of people who preyed upon the vulnerability of children and/or their parents.

The book is written from two viewpoints, one in the present and the second from a twelve year old girl in 1939.  Lisa Wingate has the talent to present this brutal tale tenderly.  Finding where these two stories intersect makes for the excitement of the book.  It is impossible not to get swept up in this near perfect novel – it invates your heart fromt he very first pages and stays there long after the book is finished.”  HuffingtonPost, 2017

Join the Red Jacket Readers as we discuss Before We Were Yours; the book club is open to everyone.  The library has multiple copies of the book to check out, and it is also available for purchase in local stores.
