Governor Whitmer Wants Line 5 Closed Until Damage is Assessed and Corrected

Governor Whitmer has sent a second letter to Enbridge CEO Al Monaco, requesting they shut down Line 5 immediately until the damage to the pipeline is investigated, assessed and preventative measures are in place.

Damage was discovered last Thursday.

Apparently, Enbridge had temporarily shut the pipeline down, but started it back up, after no leaks were found.

Whitmer said she was taken aback to learn the company had unilaterally resumed operation of the west leg without even opportunity for discussion.

Whitmer also asked Enbridge to provide a full report detailing the cause of the damage and measures Enbridge will put in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

The state, or a third party chosen by the state, would  then review the report.

After that, the state and Enbridge could then resume talks on when operations could return to normal.

Currently, the east leg of the pipeline remains closed as Enbridge gathers more information through divers and remotely operated vehicles.
