Hancock Campground Costs to Rise – City Council Report

It will cost a bit more to set up at the Hancock campground this summer.

At last night’s meeting, the city council approved raising the price of using waterfront sites, and those with water or electric hook-ups, to $30 per day. Other improved sites will cost $25. The cost to use a tent site will remain at $15. The new rates will take effect April 1st for all new campsite bookings.

The process of creating the city’s next budget is underway, with the first city council work session scheduled for April 5th. Councilors approved the city’s 2023-2028 capital improvement plan.

Council members approved the purchase of a 2023 Western Star Sander Truck from UP Truck Center for $192,000.

The city will apply for a Public Spaces Community Places grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to purchase the land used for the Ryan Street Garden. That property is currently owned by Finlandia University, and will be sold as part of the college’s dissolution. An aspect of the grant would require the city to participate in a crowdfunding effort for a portion of the grant funding.
