Hancock Hires MS Principal; Houghton-Portage Prepares for Online HS

Hancock Middle School has a new principal.

Jesse Kentala has spent 15 years as an English teacher and guidance counselor at the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City area schools. He coached the Blue Bolts basketball team for 14 seasons.

The Hancock Board of Education approved his hiring at its meeting last night.

Superintendent Steve Patchin said Kentala will also guide the district’s move from semesters to trimesters. The trimester system has been in place at Dollar Bay for some time.

Kentala will begin his new job November 30th.

Meanwhile, at a quiet Houghton Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Doreen Kramer said they’re ready for another switch by high school students to distance learning…

“We’ve been there before. We had a two-week shutdown, and we also had three days when the high school was also remote, so we pretty much have that routine down.”

All high schools in Michigan will move to online learning beginning tomorrow for at least three weeks, per the latest Epidemic Order from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
