Hancock Supports Local Sovereignty; Puts Off Stands on Line Five and Jail Expansion

The City of Hancock has gone on record supporting an effort to repeal a state law that prevents local communities from banning plastic grocery bags.

The Michigan law was passed in late 2016, in response to a movement by cities across the country to ban items that aren’t biodegradable. That includes the plastic bags used by grocers and many other retailers.

The resolution was proposed by council member Will Lytle. He and other council members who unanimously voted in favor were careful to say that they’re not planning to ban plastic bags, or anything else. They’re more concerned about the general issue of state government taking control of local issues away from local governments.

Lytle also brought two more resolutions to the council at last night’s meeting.

One called for an immediate halt to any type of oil transportation under the Great Lakes, including the Enbridge Line Five pipeline at the Straits of Mackinac, and the proposed tunnel under the Straits that might someday house Line Five’s replacement. Council members tabled that so they could do some personal research.

The other would have put the city on record opposing any expansion of the Houghton County Jail. Council members tabled that, feeling it was inappropriate to take a stand on the issue before an actual proposal has been presented.
