Houghton Announces Spring Cleanup Dates

It certainly doesn’t seem like spring today but residents should start looking ahead to spring cleanup.

The City of Houghton has announced that dumpsters will be available at the city garage at the corner of Technical Avenue and Gundlach Road May 3rd to June 9th. The dumpsters are available 7 days a week.

You’ll find a list of items allowed and not allowed on the city’s website. Wood (under four feet), brick, and metal (place in specially labeled dumpster) are allowed. Furniture, clothes, tires, cardboard, paint and empty cans, house garbage, and lightbulbs of any type are not allowed.

Yard cleanup will begin in May and continue through November where residents can dispose of yard waste on the east side of the city salt storage building. There are two dedicated areas–one for leaves and lawn waste and another for branches and tree trimming waste. Please follow the signs.

Special pickup can be arranged for seniors (65 years & older) and residents with disabilities living in single family homes. Call ahead to the city at 482-1700 to have your name put on the list and provide your name and address. Do not leave items at the curb side. You must keep it on your own property until the city can pick it up. Items will be picked up on May 17th, June 7th, and June 21st.

The city will also be cleaning up sand this year but residents must have their sand piled on the side of the road to be picked up by the sweeper. Do not block travel lanes and put your sand on a cross street to avoid hills, if possible. The sweeper will be by to pick up sand only on May 31st.
