Houghton Approves City Budget; Authorizes Potential Bond Sale for Parking Deck Demolition

The City of Houghton has approved its 2022-2023 budget.

The $17.8 million plan was adopted by the city council last night. The base property tax millage rate will remain unchanged, at 15 mills.

The council also voted to authorize borrowing up to $1.5 million to tear down the aging big parking deck. Officials will continue to look for alternate sources of funding for the project, but will be able to issue bonds to cover the shortfall.

The city will add three more electric vehicle charging stations. Keweenaw Power and Light will install them. The city’s cost will be $20,474.

Also at last night’s meeting, after a public hearing, council members adopted the city’s new capital improvement plan. They set August 2nd as Bicycle Day – the Tour da Yoop, eh? bicycle tour is scheduled to visit the city that day. The council welcomed Ray Martens from South Range as the newest member of the city’s fire department.

And, city council sessions will be returning to the internet. Council members will test one-way streaming of their meetings over the next six months. The city used a two-way stream during the pandemic, but dropped it when in-person meetings resumed.
