Houghton To Celebrate Victorian Style Christmas

Houghton is known as a town where history is in the making.

The city will be taking a step back into history this holiday season as they celebrate Christmas Victorian style.

On December 9th from 4pm-7pm, the city of Houghton will present a Victorian Christmas with events at several locations.

Santa Claus will greet kids at the Carnegie Museum and there will be waterfront sleigh rides starting at the Portage Lake District Library and going down to Ray Kestner Waterfront Park and back.

There will also be candle dipping demonstrations and hot roast beef sandwiches, free while supplies last.

Burn barrels will be lit to help keep people warm and everyone is encouraged to dress in costumes from the Victorian era.

One of the highlights is the lighting of the new Houghton Christmas Tree–a 20 to 25 foot tree that will be placed at the Bridgeview Park.

The lighting ceremony will take place at 6:30pm.

Lt. Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department said they want to encourage people to come downtown and then stay for the shopping, restaurants and other events that are taking place that weekend.

Lt. Roberts said Houghton has some 40 to 50 volunteers helping to make this event happen.
