Houghton City Employees to Receive Hazard Bonuses

Houghton city employees will be receiving $2,000 hazard pay bonuses.

Agreements with the city’s three employee unions, and an additional commitment to non-union employees, were approved at Wednesday night’s council meeting.

City Manager Eric Waara explained that city employees had agreed to forego a formal pay increase this year, because of COVID-19-related budget uncertainties. That hasn’t stopped them from doing their best under trying circumstances…

“Nearly all the city employees are considered essential workers, and have worked throughout the pandemic.”

This is the final year of all three union contracts, covering police officers, police supervisors and public works employees. Negotiations on new labor agreements will begin next spring.
