Water and sewer rates could be going up soon in Houghton.
Last night, the city council set a public hearing for January 8th to consider the first adjustment in seven years.
City Manager Eric Waara said the increase is needed to support a major project coming up, most of which will be paid by federal grants and loans.
The average residential customer would see a monthly increase of $4.54 on their combined monthly water, sewer and garbage bill.
The council will also hold a public hearing on January 8th on a proposal to raise the compensation of city council members.
If approved, pay would increase by $5.00, so councilors would receive $75.00 per meeting, and the mayor would receive $105.00.
The increase would not take effect until after the next election.
