Houghton County To Begin Accepting Bids For Arena Roof Replacement

Here is a recap of the Houghton County Board of Commissioners meeting on February 14th, 2017.

Requests for bids for the Houghton County Arena roof replacement project will be sent out.

The County Board approved the move at their February meeting on Tuesday.

The board is still unsure how the project will be funded and having an estimate as to the cost will help them make that decision.

The arena will also be tested for lead paint, which could raise the cost of the project if the results come back positive.

The board also agreed to go forward with a grant application to renovate the Houghton County Marina.

The piers at the marina are reportedly in bad shape and need to be replaced.

The grant would be for $250,000 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to cover half of the cost of the project, if approved.

Renovations at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility are set to begin.

The $8.5 million project includes extensive remodeling of the basement, ground floor and first floor, with additional remodeling on the second and third floors, plus upgrades to the food service and creating a more home-like atmosphere on all floors.

Work is expected to start on March 15th and will take about 18 months.

The facility is planning a groundbreaking ceremony for March 13th at 10am.

A new daycare center in Hancock will be supported by the county through the Revolving Loan Fund.

The board voted to make the $48,000 loan to the private non-profit center.

The 5 year loan is at an interest rate of 6.4 percent.

The center will provide care for toddlers and infants.

The Copper Country Recycling Initiative presented the board with an award thanking them and the Houghton County Planning Commission for establishing a recycling facility at the Houghton County Transfer Station to benefit residents and support a healthy environment.
