Houghton County Offers New Substance Abuse Program

Houghton County has a new Syringe Service Program, which is more than providing clean needles to residents battling substance abuse, it also provides counseling services, so people can get on the road to recovery.

Gail Ploe, Prevention Specialist and Drug Counselor from the Western U.P. Health Department, said the substance abuse problem, is not limited to big cities.

Ploe also cited a study from the Michigan Department of Public health, where three of the 5 Western U.P Counties, were at risk for a dramatic outbreak, in illnesses such as Hepatitis C and HIV.

The Michigan Department of Public Health, is working hard, to stop an epidemic and to also provide resources that will help people win the battle against addiction.

For help, stop by Dial Help Annex across from the Portage Plaza Mall, on Thursday from 12:30p-3:30p, with no fear of reprisal from law enforcement.
