Houghton Man Escapes Burning Car After Crash

A Houghton man was able to escape a fiery crash in Torch Lake Township early Saturday morning.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department tells us the 26-year-old was southbound on Baulman Road around 6:30 at a high rate of speed when he crested a hill near Nightingale Road, and saw a curve ahead.

He hit the brakes… skidded for around 170 feet… left the road… slid another 150 feet through a grassy area… then struck a tree.

The driver got out of the vehicle, which was engulfed in flames by the time the Dollar Bay fire department arrived.

The driver’s name has not been released. He was taken by ambulance to UP Health System-Portage for evaluation.
