Houghton Police Prepare For Legalized Marijuana

The newly passed state marijuana law is going to take time for law enforcement agencies to get used to.  That was the word from Houghton City Police Chief John Donnelly, who spoke on the subject at Wednesday night’s city council meeting.

“Our officers are going have to stay up to date with the marijuana law,” Donnelly said. “There are going to be gray areas with this, no doubt.”

City manager Eric Waara said last week’s snowfall caused some problems in the city.  While city crews did a good job of keeping things clear, there were more accidents than normal reported on the Lift Bridge.  That was caused when wet snow didn’t go through the grates on the bridge, causing slippery spots.

In other action, the council:
* OK’d Zachary Jones as a new member of the fire department.
* Set a Dec. 5 date for the meeting of Hancock and Houghton city councils.
* Approved the contract of city manager Waara.
