KBIC Calls Off Grow Farm Purchase

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community has decided not to proceed with the purchase of a marijuana growing facility in Marquette County.

KBIC voters recently approved a request from the Tribal Council to invest up to four million dollars in the medical marijuana business. The Tribe’s initial target was Fresh Coast Farms, which is located at the former U.S. Navy ELF transmitting site in Humboldt Township.

In a press release, Council President Warren “Chris” Swartz, Jr., said the subsequent due diligence process brought the council to the conclusion that the purchase was not in the Tribe’s best interest.

The release also indicated that the Council might use the authority granted by the referendum to develop its own marijuana growing and processing operation, along with a dispensary, at the former Marquette Airport site in Negaunee Township, which the Tribe owns.

It promised that a community meeting would be held soon to gain input from Tribal members.
