Luokkanen announced his decision at the Keweenaw County Board meeting on Wednesday. He has served for more than three years, after being elected to replace the retiring Ron Lahti in the November, 2016 election.

Undersheriff Curt Pennala has been appointed to fill out Luokkanen’s term as sheriff, which will expire at the end of this year.

The decision was made, per state law, by Probate Court Judge Keith Deforge, County Clerk Julie Carlson, and Prosecuting Attorney Charles Miller.
