Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative Celebrates 10 Years

A Keweenaw Peninsula environmental outreach program is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this week.

K-12 students are invited to attend and take part in several hands on activities on the campus of Michigan Tech.

Founded in 2008, the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative works with K-12 students in area schools to engage young people to take an interest and care for the Great Lakes.

“A lot of projects have been created in schools and communities across the Western UP as a result of the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative,” said, Joan Chadde, MTU Director of the Center of Science and Environmental Outreach

From planting trees and gardens to monitoring water supplies and maintaining and researching wildlife, groups of students from area K-12 schools are encouraged to take part and help sustain our natural resources.

Chadde said, “They’ve developed everything from rain gardens to reducing invasive species, to growing gardens. We’ve been doing trail construction and a number of schools have worked at their school forest.”

The anniversary celebration event will be held this Thursday at the Great Lakes Research Center from 6:00 to 8:00 pm where students will learn about “No trace recreation”, leaving behind only footprints when visiting the outdoors. They will also participate in a short lesson in eco-friendly packaging.

Highlights include live music, an art exhibit from World Water Day will be on display, along with an anniversary cake and refreshments.

The event is free and everyone is invited.
