L’Anse Man Arrested After Pipe Bomb Found In His Car

A 19-year-old L’Anse man is facing charges after a pipe bomb and drug paraphernalia were found in his car.

Troopers from the Michigan State Police Calumet Post responded to a two-car accident Friday around 4:30pm on Denton Road near US-41.

A vehicle driven by a 59-year-old Chassell woman was stopped on Denton Road waiting to turn left onto US-41 when it was rear ended by another vehicle, driven by the L’Anse man.

The accident resulted in minor damage to the vehicles with no injuries.  The L’Anse man was found to have no insurance and an improper registration plate on his vehicle.

During the course of the investigation, a MSP canine was used and gave a positive indication for narcotics on the at-fault driver’s vehicle.  The following search of the vehicle led to the discovery of drug paraphernalia and a pipe bomb located in the vehicle.

After the pipe bomb was discovered, the Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was contacted and they came out and rendered the bomb safe.

The 19-year-old suspect was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon, no insurance, and improper registration plate.  He was lodged in the Houghton County jail pending arraignment.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the Houghton Police Department, Michigan State Police Canine Unit, Michigan State Police Bomb Squad, and Superior Towing.
