Launch Party For Virtual Time Traveling Program

Ever wanted to travel back in time to see how people lived in the Keweenaw before?

The Keweenaw Time Traveler is set to launch this week, giving people a virtual opportunity to take that trip.

A group of Michigan Tech researches led the project to create a digital map that allows users to explore how the area has changed over time.

The project is officially called the “Copper Country Historical Spatial Data Infrastructure” and was supported in part by a three-year grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for over $250,000.

Using Geographic Information Science technology, the researchers combined historical data into stages that allows the user to drill down through the layers of time.

Want to try for yourself?

A launch party is being held Thursday at the Carnegie Museum in downtown Houghton from 6:30pm-8:00pm.
