Library Millage Renewal Passes

The millage renewal for the Portage Lake District Library received overwhelming support from voters in Tuesday’s election.

The seven-year renewal received 1,071 yes votes to only 131 voting against.

The millage is the primary funding source for the library and its programs, bringing in an estimated $460,000 in revenue annually.

The average cost to a household in the City of Houghton is $97 a year, with Portage Township residents paying an average of $64.

Chassell Township residents voted to withdraw from the library district last year, which becomes effective at the end of 2018.

More than 88,000 visits were made to the library last year, checking out over 116,000 items.

There are about 5,200 residents who have a library card.
