Local Load Limits Expand to State Trunk Lines

Seasonal weight restrictions take effect this morning on all state trunklines in the Upper Peninsula.

The Michigan Department of Transportation limits apply to highways with M- and US- designations. They typically roll payloads back by 35 percent on asphalt surfaces, with additional restrictions for oversized loads.

Seasonal restrictions for local roads in Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties have been in place for a week.

Load limits are designed to relieve stress on paved surfaces during times when the roadbeds underneath soften as winter frost thaws. They will be lifted when the roadbeds stabilize.

If you have questions about the weight restrictions, contact your local county road commission.
