Local Snowmobile Trails Suffering

The returning colder temperatures haven’t done much to help snowmobile trail conditions in our region.

The warm weather and rain last week melted snow from some trails completely, and left others too icy to groom.

DNR Upper Peninsula trails coordinator Ron Yesney says trails officially remain open, but snowmobilers should use caution.

Keweenaw Peninsula trails are reported to have lots of soft spots and water holes. Baraga County reports poor conditions, with dirt showing on all the trails, and water in several locations.

Yesney also notes that, with snow levels low, some might be tempted to take ATVs on to the trails. Off-road vehicles are not legally permitted on many snowmobile trails. Half of all snowmobile trails are on private land where permission is granted for snowmobile use only. ATV appearances could cause property owners to close the trails.

While colder temperatures have returned, the next chance of significant snowfall isn’t until late next week.
