Marquette Police Car Involved In Fatal Accident

An investigation is being conducted into a fatal crash in Marquette County involving a Marquette City Police patrol car.

The accident happened just after 4pm Tuesday on M-553 in Sands Township, just south of the city of Marquette.

The Michigan State Police say a vehicle driven by 80-year-old Nathanial Carpenter of Marquette crossed the center line and struck the patrol car head on.

Carpenter was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer was taken to UP Health System—Marquette and is listed in stable condition.

Police say it appears that a pre-existing medical condition likely contributed to the crash.
