Materials Needed To Build Lending Libraries

A local community outreach program is asking for your support with a small building project.

Baraga County Communities That Care, a non profit organization that promotes healthy living in the local community, is seeking donations of building material that will be used to keep books and literature dry.

Recently the organization held a suicide prevention walk on the L’Anse waterfront, and is currently working on another project to keep students informed and on the right path.

“The Lending Libraries was a project through our suicide prevention workgroup. They wanted to create a space where people can give and share books and knowledge, but also a spot where local information on help can be provided, too,” said organization coordinator Carrie Rich.

The group plans to place two book lending libraries between Baraga and L’Anse which will contain brochures on crisis prevention as well as general reading material to promote reading and literacy.

Rich said, “We’re potentially going to be putting it right outside Java by the Bay, which is a coffee shop in L’Anse. The other location in Baraga is right outside their high school. Those locations have a little bit more visibility and people can watch them a little bit more closely.”

Volunteers will be constructing the outdoor structures, but materials are needed before the project can begin and donations are being sought.

“We have a long list of supplies. The supplies themselves are simple things like wood and nails and shingles. Really, we’re just looking for as much help as we can to get the supplies because every little bit helps,” said Rich.

If you have any of the mentioned materials and would like to donate to the cause, you can contact the organization through its website, www.baragacountyctc.org or by telephone (906) 201-4024 or email baragacountyctc@gmail.com

Rich said, “We really are hoping that people will get behind it and help us bring it to completion.”
