Michigan Tech Mushers Finish First Sled Dog Race

The Mushing Club at Michigan Tech has finished its first sled dog race in Minnesota.  Two mushers from the club entered the John Beargrease, the longest sled dog race in the lower 48, over the weekend to face the 20 below temperatures.

The Beargrease, which was named after John Beargrease who did mail delivery between Two Harbors and Grand Marias, MN during the winter months, is one of two Iditarod qualifiers in the upper Midwest, with the other being the UP200 coming up Feb 15th-17th.

Ben Nicholson and Andrew Watson from the MTU Mushing Club placed 4th and 10th respectively in the Beargrease 40, with the winner being Jim Ward with a finishing time of 2:59.52.  Ben finished with time of 3:17.20 and Andrew finished with time of 3:33.17.

Ryan Anderson, Martha Schouweiler, and Joanna Oberg finished out the top 3 for the Beargrease 120.

All of these mushers will be in Calumet for the 10th Running of the CopperDog150 March 1st -3rd.
