National Snow Sculpting Champs to Offer Tips Locally

As preparations begin for this year’s Winter Carnival snow statue competition, some nationally-recognized experts will visit the area to offer some advice.

The group Sculptora Borealis will be in town this weekend, and has set up several sessions that are open not only to Michigan Tech students, but to all members of the community.

Sculptora Borealis is based in Wisconsin, and has won the last two National Snow Sculpting Championships.

Over the weekend, they and a group of MTU students will build an eight-by-eight-by-eight-foot snow statue, while teaching techniques to save time, design excellent snow suspensions, and produce incredible finishes.

Their visit is sponsored by the Blue Key Society, which organizes Winter Carnival.

Sessions will be held on the patio of the JR Van Pelt and Opie Library, and are scheduled for this evening from 6:00 until 8:00, and tomorrow from 9:00 until noon and 1:00 until 6:00. A Sunday session has been tentatively set for 9:00 until 1:00.

Michigan Tech’s 101st Winter Carnival will take place February 8th through 11th, with the theme “Tasty Foods for Wintry Moods.”
